DUALS RED STRIPE

Our goal for teaching Red to back is not to pull him back.  We want him to learn to back by being asked to shift his weight back and then continue to back because of leg pressure. Click here to see Eleanor's show mare back.  This is our goal for Red.
The first thing we need to teach Red is to shift his weight back when cued.
Don shortens the reins, gets Red to shift his weight rearward and applies leg pressure, while saying "back".  Even though Red is slow to respond Don does not apply stronger force on the reins...he just holds the reins steady  and continues with leg pressure.
To get Red to stop backing, leg pressure is released.
