We know that Red lopes pretty well on the lunge line,
so loping with a rider shouldn't be a big deal. Don asks for the right lead by applying left leg pressure as he tips Red's nose slightly to right. Note that he is not using much rein pressure, in fact, when he can he just pitches the reins. The idea is to keep Red as relaxed as possible by working in the same area as he has been lungeing. Don tips his nose in the direction of travel, then let's Red move along basically on his own. At this stage we are not interested in collection or head position, just that Red is relaxed and as balanced as possible...Red is learning to carry the weight of a rider by keeping his feet under him. |
